One of the most sought after and noble profession, teaching is considered to be an amazing career option. Teaching serves the society by building foundation of a country’s future. It is the fine art of shaping young minds and enhancing their skills. Teaching is not restricted to the classroom anymore and is only one part of the job. Greater level of involvement and interaction are required to be a competent teacher. It is has been aptly said that ‘Teaching is the profession that teaches all the other professions’.
A teacher
should possess patience, perseverance, good communication skills, innovative
thinking, integrity, sincerity and passion for exchanging ideas. Good values
should be instilled in the students and they should be equipped with making
independent decisions. Imposing rigid rules and dampening the spirits of the
students is not the work of teachers. Teachers should nourish their students in
a healthy manner.
Yes, teaching
is also quite a challenging job and not at all monotonous.
Eligibility
to become a teacher requires a bachelor’s degree in education (B.Ed.) or a
degree in home science. A graduation score of 55 per cent is a prerequisite. A
bachelor’s degree may be followed up with a master’s degree (M.Ed.). In order
to be a lecturer in a college, one needs to clear the entrance exam,
compulsorily earn a master’s degree and Ph.D. The clockwork of a teacher in a
school or college varies accordingly. At the entry level a teacher is expected
to earn from rupees 10000 to 20000 per month and gradually with experience, one
can expect to earn a higher pay package. Salaries tend to vary according to
grade and school. Teaching is not considered as only a woman’s job anymore and
a large number of men are taking it up as a serious
profession. As every profession, teaching also suffers from some pros and cons.
While the profession provides a secure work environment, satisfaction, respect,
balanced and a good work life, it might lead to career stagnation, fewer
incentives, lack of creativity and a lower pay package. A teacher has to be a
friend, guide and a philosopher in order to succeed.
If we talk
about India, we have very few quality teachers and teachers who love this art
and follow it to make it their profession reach heights. Teaching is a
profession which is recession proof and gives you a sense of achievement every
academic year.
Without a
doubt it can be said that teaching is a profession that provides one with high
level of contentment and joy. It is of extreme importance that people
understand the true worth of being a good teacher and consider it seriously
while deciding upon a career option. Teaching is the basis of achieving a
society that will effectively and efficiently lead to the overall development
of our economy.
PS: We need people to
consider ‘teaching’ as a profession by choice and not as a fall out option.
PS2: It might not be a
corporate structured profession but it has its own charm, fame and money too.
