Tips for Preparing Resume For
an Overseas Job
Working in a foreign country is a tempting thought for many. The desire
to explore the unknown, curiosity about the foreign land, its culture and
people gets better off many and they venture into overseas territories for
pursuing different employment opportunities.
However, before you even
think of something similar your attention should be on creating a CV that is
suited to international jobs-i.e an international resume.
A
professional resume is only as effective as its target readers find it. Whether
it is a company in the same city as you currently reside or an employer who is
in the other side of the globe, your CV should be able to address the
requirements and sensibilities of the reader. Impressing an international
recruiter is always going to be a challenging task than impressing a local one,
as there is a major difference in the social, cultural and professional
expectations. You will certainly have to
put greater efforts and research while conceptualizing such a CV, but in the
end if you are able to get it right, the results will be worth it.
The Major Difference
International resumes are
different from the domestic CVs as international employers tend to place
greater importance on the individual’s personality and attributes which decide
his ability to adapt to a foreign work environment. Their emphasis on your
technical skills will be less as they focus on your international I.Q. Thus your CV should be able to highlight the
cross-cultural skills, and other smaller details that are unique to job
applications for international jobs.
Reflect your personality
The professional document you are
sending out to the employer should be able to reflect your personality. Right
from your career objective to skills, education and work experience every
section should be tailored to meet the expectations of the international job
you are applying to. This breakdown helps international employer know the
inside out of your personality, who you are and why you are good at your work.
Group International experience together if any
If you already have some kind of
international experience it would help you immensely in gaining the new job.
However, instead of scattering your international experience, group it under
one section. This way you will be increasing its impact and minimizing the
chances that the recruiter’s eyes miss any of it. Any
international volunteering or internship will also add to the effect.
Language and Style
Another important point to keep
in mind while sending your application for an overseas job is to
adapt the language and style of the CV as per the standards of that country or
geographical region. If you can send the resume in the native language of that
country- nothing like that. However, do so only if you are confident enough
about your proficiency in that language. Most of the nations use English as a
common medium of communication. Therefore, sending your resume in English will
also work fine, as long as it doesn’t have any errors.
Length
An international resume is
usually longer as it contains a lot of extra information about your personality
which you would usually not include in a domestic resume. A 3 to 4 page resume
is normal. However, that doesn’t mean that you will include every single
non-relevant detail about your family, professional work history or
personality. The more you respect the recruiter’s time the better for you.
Other details
There are a host of other details
that must be a part of your international resume.
Language and travel descriptions should be more detailed. You can also list the
citizenship details, and your marital status is also a good idea, as a single
professional is considered more open to travelling across the globe. Knowledge
of a third language other than English and native language is always beneficial.
